Classic stamping essentially refers to the physical punching out of the sheet metal product.
The punching tool (the punch) cuts out the desired perforation in a single stroke by sinking into its counterpart (the die) along the entire contour.
In the cover image, you can see two such tool pairs and the perforations they created on the sheet metal product.

However, stamping does not necessarily mean cutting completely through a specific contour; it can also be used to create indentations, protrusions, louvers, or even hinges with high speed and high precision.
